Second Presbyterian Church has a deep commitment to community outreach. We serve the community in three ways: we volunteer support to agencies, we donate 20% of the church's annual budget to benevolences, and we share facilities with community groups and agencies.

For more information or to participate in any volunteer opportunities, please contact us by e-mail or the agency directly. Thank you for your interest in the Outreach Ministries of Second Presbyterian!

What do you bring to the table?

We bring bread, made by many people's work, from an unjust world where some have plenty and most go hungry. We bring wine, made by many people's work, from an unjust world where some have leisure and most struggle to survive. And now, we bring canned goods, made by many people's hands, from an unjust world where we shop in the abundance of the grocery store and our neighbors face scarcity at food pantries. Christ invites all; let us make the table ready.

On the first Sunday of every month, we are having a non-perishable food drive in conjunction with the joyful feast of God for the people of God. Our donations will go to the Martha O'Bryan Center, a faith-based social service agency that serves those in poverty surrounding Cayce Place in East Nashville. Their food pantry feeds more than a thousand hungry families each month, and we have been working with them over the last few years collecting high-priority items. As a way to extend our table out into the community, we ask that you add a number of the following items to your grocery list at the beginning of each month and bring them on communion Sunday.

- canned proteins (tuna, ham, chicken, beef stew)
Canned chicken and tuna (packed in water) are more of a priority than ever. Second Harvest is no longer purchasing these items for distribution, yet they provide an important and easy to prepare protein source for families in need.

- baking mixes (muffins, cornbread) - canned fruits
- canned vegetables
- can openers
- canola oil
- instant potatoes
- condiments (jam, ketchup, mustard, mayo)
- 100% fruit juice
- baby food

Many of you may remember that members of the Islamic Center of Nashville were among the first to respond to our own plight when we lost our sanctuary due to a fire in 2003. Responding to individuals and groups in Middle Tennessee who oppose construction of a mosque in Murfreesboro, our session has adopted the following resolution:......
